On January 3, 2005, Hillside Animal Hospital received the 2005 Small Hospital of the Year Award for excellence in veterinary hospital design. The award is presented annually by Veterinary Economics Magazine, an international business periodical for veterinarians. The competition honored the hospital for it's beautiful interior design, Peticulars Boutique and Chow Time retail areas, and overall functionality. A panel of judges evaluated forty-one veterinary hospitals around the country, paying particular attention to the following categories:
  • Site plan
  • Outpatient areas
  • Inpatient areas
  • Quality of finish materials
  • Mechanical features
  • Plumbing features
  • Electrical features
  • Overall features
The Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Competition recognizes exceptional veterinary facilities that improve pet owners' experiences at the hospital, support top-quality pet care, maximize practice efficiency, and emphasize comfortable working conditions for veterinarians and veterinary team members. These award-winning facilities set the standard for cutting-edge veterinary hospital design. Hillside Animal Hospital will be featured in an upcoming issue of Veterinary Economics. Congratulations to Dr. Brad and Cathy Rosonke and the staff at Hillside Animal Hospital!

New Rattlesnake Vaccine Helps Rattlesnake Vaccine Helps
to Reduce Damage Caused by Bites

Dogs can encounter a rattlesnake at anytime in the Phoenix metro area. The area surrounding Hillside Animal Hospital is particularly attractive to rattlesnakes, creating a potential hazard to area dogs. Rattlesnakes can even intrude residential backyards or front doorways…areas that otherwise may seem "safe" for pets. Like people, dogs may stumble upon a snake by accident, and curiosity or a protective instinct can place your dog at risk.

Any rattlesnake bite is a veterinary emergency. Rattlesnake venom is a complex mixture of toxins that spreads through a dog's body following the bite. The toxic components of snake venom are very painful and can have serious consequences. Even if your dog survives the immediate effects of a rattlesnake bite, he can be permanently injured.

The good news…
A new vaccine now can defend your dog by creating an immunity that works right away to help neutralize the toxins. The vaccine also stimulates your dog's own immunity, making vaccination safer than antivenom treatment. Protective antibodies made by your dog in response to the vaccine start neutralizing venom immediately. On average, antibody levels in recently vaccinated dogs are comparable to treatment with three vials of antivenom. This means vaccinated dogs should experience less pain and a reduced risk of permanent injury from a rattlesnake bite. It's important to know that even if your dog is vaccinated against rattlesnake venom, he should be taken to a veterinarian for evaluation and care as soon as possible following snakebite.

The first year your dog is vaccinated, he should receive two doses of vaccine spaced one month apart. Subsequent booster doses are recommended annually. A physical exam is required prior to any vaccination.

Rattlesnake vaccination can reduce the overall effects of snakebite, reduce or eliminate the need for antivenom, and decrease other treatment costs as well. It is a cost effective way to put you and your pet at ease. Call us at 480-391-7297 to schedule an appointment to protect your dog.
