Canine Senior Wellness Guidelines
Our pets will always remain young at heart, but their bodies can age faster than we perceive. Dogs are considered to be seniors after the age of 6. As your partner in pet health, our goal is to prolong your pet's life through wellness. Our specially designed senior program makes it easy for you to know when to schedule visits so that we can be proactive in early detection of health issues before they become life threatening.
WELLNESS RECOMMENDATIONS
Full blood profile - recommended starting at age 6, and every 2 years thereafter, to evaluate liver, kidney and thyroid functions along with a complete blood count to evaluate red and white blood cells for detection of infections or early signs of some types of cancer.
Urinalysis - a thorough analysis will allow for evaluation of bladder and kidney function, as well as for early detection of diabetes, bladder or kidney infections and renal failure. This is recommended starting at age 8 for dogs over 50 pounds and at age 10 for dogs under 50 pounds. Urinalyses are then recommended every 2 years thereafter.
X-Rays - recommended at age 8 for dogs over 50 pounds and at age 10 for dogs under 50 pounds to evaluate the chest and abdomen for early signs of cancer, respiratory disease or cardiac disease. Also, x-rays of hips and back to detect for early signs of arthritis. X-rays are recommended every 2 years after the initial series in order to provide the most thorough detection.
