Endocrine Conditions
 Hypothyroidism
About the condition:
- A deficiency in the secretion of thyroid hormone.
How to detect this condition:
- A blood test can determine whether your pet is within the normal range of thyroid hormone. your doctor recommends checking the thyroid level at the age of 6 and every other year thereafter.
Musculoskeletal Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
About the condition:
- Caused by various deformities of the hip along with the development of degenerative joint disease.
- Nutrition and exercise can help in prevention.
How to detect this condition:
- It is important to have X-rays taken to find any deformities or degeneration of the hip joints.
- IThese x-rays are recommended at the time of spay/neuter (or at age 2 for breeding dogs) and then again at age 6.
Neoplastic (Cancer) Conditions
Lymphosarcoma
About the condition:
- Lymphosarcoma is a malignant disease also commonly termed malignant lymphoma, most common tumor in dogs.
How to detect this condition:
- Regular annual exams can help to detect this disease. your doctor also recommends checking blood work starting at the age of 6 and every other year thereafter.
Neurological Conditions
Discospondylitis
About the condition:
- This is an infection of the intervertebral disc with osteomyelitis of adjoining vertebral bodies.
How to detect this condition:
- Signs may include loss of appetite, fever, pain and/or partial paralysis.
- X-Rays are indicated every other year starting at age of 6 and every 2 years thereafter.
Ocular Conditions
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
About the condition:
- This disease causes an abnormal accumulation of pigment within the retina resulting in progressive retinal degeneration and visual deficiencies.
How to detect this condition:
- Checking the eyes regularly in conjunction with annual wellness exams can help detect this condition.
