Hillside on the Cutting Edge of Surgery and Diagnostics
Written by Dr. Brad Rosonke
Have you ever watched the movie “Fantastic Voyage”, which was later remade into a movie called “Inner Space”?  Both of these movies show heroes that shrink themselves down to a tiny size and travel throughout the human body.  Now with the latest in veterinary technology the doctors at Hillside Animal Hospital are able to explore animals bodies with no or minimal invasiveness.

The ultrasound machine allows us to look deep into the abdominal and chest cavities of pets painlessly and without the need for anesthesia.   Ultrasound allows us to ultrasounddrrexamine a pet’s heart in much greater detail than can with traditional X-Rays.  We can look at the thickness of the heart muscle, observe any changes or damage to the heart valves, and follow the flow of blood throughout the heart.  We can even determine how much blood the heart is pumping at any given moment.  In the abdomen we are able to look for liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, intestinal, and bladder disease.

With our gastroscope we can explore inside the stomach, intestines, and colon. We are then able to look for disease, take biopsies, or even remove foreign objects such as string, socks, and coins from the stomach.  We can do all this without even making an incision!

Our bronchoscope helps us use a camera to look along the trachea and deep into lung tissues for any signs of disease.  We are able to diagnose tracheal collapse, pneumonia, asthma, and different types of lung cancer with this scope.

Our newest addition to our surgical equipment, our laparoscope, allows us to perform minimally invasive surgery.  By using a laparoscope we are able to make 2 tiny incisions (about the size of a pen) to insert a camera and an operating instrument.  We can explore the whole abdominal cavity looking at the liver, spleen, kidneys, stomach, laparoscopyintestines, lymph nodes, and bladder.  We have already performed bladder stone removal, gastrointestinal surgery, and several spays with great results.  It is so great to see our patients jumping and running the day of the surgery.

We even have small enough equipment to now use cameras to explore deep into the nostrils looking for sinus disease with our rhinoscope; and look for stones, polyps, and cancer in the bladder using a cystoscope.  It is now possible for us to remove small bladder stones from female dogs without any incisions.
